Photos of New & Old Urbanism in Atlanta
New Urbanist Larry Felton has been posting interesting photographs of Atlanta on his blog, atlantalarry. I've never met Larry, but we've had quite a bit of correspondence through the pro-urb list. Born in Atlanta, he moved to a slowly gentrifying neighborhood in East Atlanta years ahead of the curve.
Some may be surprised to see how many nice traditional neighborhoods there are in Hotlanta. I say that because for the last few decades Atlanta has been one of the sprawl capitals of the South. It grew enormously and physically changed for the worst, inho, when all the refugees from the Rust Belt arrived in the air-conditioned splendor of the New South.
For at least a decade now, Atlantans have driven more miles per day than any other Americans. The EPA blocked their highway funding because of air pollution problems.
New Urbanism catches on the strongest where ever sprawl is worst. Combine that with the EPA's multi-million dollar penalty on highway spending, and you have a new Atlanta that's a hotbed of New Urbanism. They're reviving old neighborhoods and building new ones. The best of the new ones might be Glenwood Park.
