Another Good Café — NYC

The Café Sabarsky is in the Neue Galerie, a relatively new museum for Austrian and German art in a turn-of-the-century mansion on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 86th Street designed by Carrère & Hastings. A large, high-ceilinged room on Fifth holds a café and restaurant: for lunch and dinner, it's a popular restaurant run by the chef who owns the excellent Wallse restaurant in the West Village.

Before lunch and in the afternoon, it's more like a café, with good breakfasts and excellent coffee — try the Wiener Melange, which is something like Cappucino. In the afternoons, the pastries are very good. Open every day but Tuesday: Monday & Wednesday, 9 – 6; Thursday – Sunday, 9 – 9. In the morning you can often get one of the upholstered booths by the windows.

Both the Neue Galerie and Wallse websites are Flash sites that require an extra click or two for information about the café. The Wallse has pictures and more information about the café and restaurant. The Neue Galerie site has more information about the museum.

Breakfast, 9 - 11:30 am

Breakfast basket with honey and jam (Baguette, Croissant, Austrian wheat bread) - $7
Croissant, chocolate croissant, brioche - $2.50
Guglhupf - $3.50
Potato "Grstl" with bacon and scambled eggs - $9
Two soft-boiled eggs served in a glass - $7
One soft boiled egg - $3
Cheese plate - $7
Bavarian ham plate - $7
Baguette with salami, ham or cheese - $5
On a cold day, try the gulaschsuppe and an Austrian red wine for lunch.
