Quote of the Day

Laissez-Faire My Gas Guzzler, Already
By Simon Romero
New York Times, September 7, 2004

I don't like gas being this expensive," said Paul Kaesberg, an oncologist at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison who routinely pays $1.90 a gallon. "My driving is integral to my job, it's integral to my pleasure in life. I won't cut back on that. I might cut back on other things."

Dr. Kaesberg, whose 2004 Acura sport utility vehicle gets 18 miles to the gallon, is typical of consumers who started the summer with the shock of $2 a gallon gas, but resolutely kept driving. Even though oil prices have increased 30 percent in the last year, the nation's gusto for gasoline has not been shaken.

i'm appalled by the quote in general. people who drive big gas guzzlers and then profess shock that it costs money to fill them really astonish me. i'm even more appalled that this is an oncologist who daily sees the results of the degradation of environment. his selfish attitude makes me glad he wasn't MY oncologist when i had cancer. his focus on his pleasures and his needs in the face of bigger societal issues suggest to me that it would be difficult to receive any succor from this physician. But he probably is an astute business man. The release of toxic compounds from his car engine just make for more customers for his services in the future.
